Two films about staying connected

Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt spent their careers teaching couples how to actually talk to one another — Imago Relationship Therapy, a shelf of New York Times bestsellers, four decades of work on what happens in the space between two people.

The film records that work while they are still here to explain it, then goes one step further: their thinking is built into conversational AI avatars, so the dialogue continues after the conversation ends.

It started as a family DVD.

In 2004 the camera was pointed at two grandparents, decades into a marriage, and the question was simply how they had done it. What came back was good enough that it stopped being a family project.

It grew into Song of Songs, an online film released the year the Television Academy first recognised broadband as its own category — and it earned an Emmy nomination there. The broader program that followed, How Will We Love?, examines romantic love and the modern pressures that make long commitments hard to keep.
